The 14th Annual HR Directors Business Summit & HR Distinction Awards 2016

by Natasha Mughal

Last week, the 14th Annual HR Directors Business Summit took place over three days at the ICC in Birmingham. We had an excellent couple of days exhibiting, networking and celebrating with the HR industry in our own home town, and it was great to have the opportunity to meet with so many of our clients and candidates.

As well as exhibiting, the Network HR team were able to attend a number of talks at the summit, such as Marrying HR and Marketing (hosted by Kathryn Austin, the Chief People and Marketing Officer for Pizza Hut UK) and How to Successfully and Completely DE-MOTIVATE Your Employees as a Manager (hosted by Maxim Strashun, the Head of Talent Development EMEA for Lenovo). Both talks provided an insight into those particular HR department's ethos, and how good leadership always involves employees. They also all inspired and encouraged many of the attendees, including us, to rethink and refresh many of our strategies.

One talk that was particularly important for us was Network HR's Director, Chris Rowlands, talk on day two of the summit. Chris spoke to the attendees about who is responsible for the inherent failings in candidate assessment techniques, and pinpointed the key techniques that every recruiter should be using and how many carry a wealth of bias. The talk was received well and we are sure that many were left wondering if the techniques they have in place are efficient enough and how they can improve.

"The HR Directors Business Summit has become a key date in the diary for senior HR practitioners. The delegate list has a noticeably international flavour, and this diversity has become a core strength of the event. Add to that an enviable list of speakers - both from inside and outside of the HR industry - and it's easy to understand why this event has become a priority for many. I'm personally very proud to have been asked to present this year, choosing the topic of how best to overcome inherent biases in candidate assessment techniques. The general standard of speakers was not lost on me however... I was very happy simply to make the cut! We're very much looking forward to attending 2017's event."

As well as exhibiting at the summit, we attended the HR Distinction Awards. As we were the sponsors of the prestigious HR Team of the Year, Chris had the honour of presenting the award to the winners, Warburtons. The night was quite the formal and fun affair, with live acrobats proceeding down from the ceiling, an amazing three course meal and a fair amount of alcohol. The team donned their best attire and I am sure you would agree, they scrub up quite well!

As Chris says, we are now looking forward to next years event and we are excited for what the rest of 2016 will bring - not just for the HR Directors Business Summit - but also for the HR industry as a whole. A big congratulations to all the winners and nominees of the HR Distinction Awards, and a huge thank you to everyone who we met at the summit. We had a fantastic time, and hope to see you all again next year.
